Biodiesel Cleaning Effect
B100 is a fuel comprised of methyl esters meeting ASTM D 6751.  Methyl Esters have been used as cleaners and solvents for decades.  They make excellent parts cleaners and have been offered as low VOC (volatile organic compound) cleaners by many companies.  Biodiesel blends exhibit these same properties and tend to dissolve accumulated sediments in diesel fuel tanks and fuel lines.  These dissolved sediments can clog filters and stall engines particularly when first introducing biodiesel blends into existing equipment.   Spare filters should be on hand at all times to prevent down time.

Biodiesel spills of high concentration (B35 or more) should be cleaned immediately as it can remove some types of engine and body paint if not removed quickly.

Lubricity
The introduction of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (less than 15ppm) created problems with lubricity for engines. While most ULSD is now treated with an additive to supplement the fuel, a blend of just 2% biodiesel into ULSD provides more than adequate lubricity and can even increase the time between required oil changes by up to 20%.
